Aaron Lehman Bittinger

Aaron Lehman Bittinger, 85, of Smithsburg, passed away on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at his daughter's home.

Born June, 26, 1927, in York, PA, he was the son of the late Robert T. R. and Myrtle G. (Marks) Bittinger.

Aaron had 3 nicknames, "Mr. B.", "Big Mac", which was his truck driving handle and "Shorty" which was his childhood nickname. Aaron owned and operated three Texaco stations; was an organ tuner for M.P. Moller Pipe Organ Co, and worked as a truck driver for D.M. Bowman, Winebrenner Trucking and Horst Milk Transport. Mr. B. also worked with children and was a bus driver for many churches in Maryland and West Virginia.

His life passions were his family, his relationship with God, wood working, and truck driving. He was well respected and honored in his Bayer Drive Community. He was a lifetime member of the Fraternal Order of Police.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his loving wife and sweet heart of 65 years, Gladys I. Bittinger, who died on August 4, 2012; three brothers, Paul Bittinger and wife Betty, James Bittinger, David Bittinger and wife Jennie; two sisters, Dorothy Jumper and husband Asper, Grace Frost; brother-in-law, George Bigler; and a grandson, Donald L. Shoemaker.

He is survived by two daughters, Alice Lafferty and husband Dennis "Meeker" of Fairplay, Darlene Brewer and husband Archie of Hagerstown; two sisters, Mary Bigler of Carlisle, Ruth Western and husband Glenn of Clear Spring; a brother, John Bittinger and wife Anna Mary of Shippensburg, PA.; a sister-in-law, Roxie Bittinger of Newburg, PA; granddaughter, Annette and Eddie Clark and their children, Mandy, Matt, Aaron (his namesake), and Rachel; granddaughter, Christine and Chuck Parks and their children Joseph and Alicia; grandson, Randall Shoemaker and his sons, Dylan and Garret; a granddaughter, Susan Shupp and husband Shawn Shupp; and grandchildren, Roger and Don'A Shoemaker.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00pm on Monday, May 20, 2013 at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with the Rev. Tim Fisher officiating. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

The family would like to thank Pastor Tim Fisher of the Covenant Life Church, the Bayer Drive community, Hospice of Washington County, Dr. Newbold and the many others through this difficult time.
