Anthony G. Elia, 82, of Hagerstown, passed away Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, at the Western Maryland Hospital Center.

Born March 5, 1930, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Paolo and Renata (Mini) Elia.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean War, where he received a Bronze Star.

Anthony was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hagerstown, where he served as an usher for 50 years; Morris Frock American Legion Post 42; Hagerstown VFW; and Knights of Columbus.

Anthony was an avid gardener.

He had worked for the Western Maryland Hospital Center for 35 years.

He is survived by his loving wife of more than 50 years, Mary (Short) Elia; three daughters, Julia E. Kuczinski of Colorado, Mary K. Diaz of Hagerstown and Ruth A. Cuesta of Chambersburg, Pa.; a sister, Angelina Frank of Williamsport, Md.; a brother, Frank J. Elia of Leitersburg, Md.; six grandsons, Tyler, Matthew and Jonathan Kuczinski, and Antonio, Emilio and Manuel Cuesta; and a granddaughter, Kayla Diaz.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Lucia Ridgley.

A funeral service will be Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with the Rev. George A. Limmer officiating. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery, with military honors accorded by the Maryland State Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home.
