B.S. George Funkhouser, M.D. F.A.C.R.

George Richard Funkhouser, B.S., M.D., F.A.C.R. (Dick) 91
Former resident of Hagerstown, MD and Danville, PA., George R. Funkhouser, B.S., M.D., F.A.C.R. passed away peacefully on November 11, 2018 at the age of 91 at Miners Hospital in Hastings, PA. At the time of his passing Dr. Funkhouser was a resident of Flinton, PA. He was born on August 3, 1927 in Hagerstown, MD to the late George W. Funkhouser and Ruth Jenkins Funkhouser.
From February 1945 thru January 1947, Dr. Funkhouser served in the United States Army as a Sergeant and Physics Laboratory Technician. George R. Funkhouser, B.S.,M.D.,F.A.C.R. graduated from Hagerstown High in 1945, Franklin & Marshall College with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Minor in Chemistry in 1950 at which time he received the highest scholarship in Hagerstown for the Kieffer Scholarship, a 4-year full tuition. He graduated from The University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD. in 1954 and completed his Internship with Harrisburg Hospital in 1955. His radiology residency was at Geisinger Medical Center from 1955 - 1958. In 1958 Dr. Funkhouser was certified by American Board of Radiology in Radiology "Diagnostic and Therapeutic." Throughout his life his education was important and he continuously made this a priority. From 1957 until his retirement of 58 years of extensive dedication to Gesinger Medical Center in Danville, Pa., and medicine he continued his education throughout the country. In addition, Dr. Funkhouser shared his immeasurable knowledge and experiences through instructing conferences, writing and publishing papers, speeches, exhibits, discussions and seminars. He received numerous awards during his career including in 1972 Award Triple Winner for Case of Day, Radiological Society of North America, Chicago Illinois, and 1979 Award for Established Technique and Procedure for Use of Amipaque., 1981 and 1985 American Medical Assoc. Physicians Recognition Award, CEM. and many others.
Some of many Dr. Richard Funkhouser's memberships and senior memberships included: American Society of Neuroradiology, Radiological Society of North America, Pennsylvania Radiological Society, American Medical Assoc., Pennsylvania Medical Society, Montour County Medical Society, Member of The Board of Directors, Montour, County Medical Society, American Society of North America, Committee Chairman for Committee on Tomography, selection of new equipment, Committee on CAT Scanner on new R/F unit, American College of Radiology Fellowship, Committee member on Professional Relationships, Pennsylvania Radiology Society, etc. Dr. Funkhouser was honored to hold the offices of Vice Chairman Exhibits Committee of Pennsylvania Radiological Society, Counselor to central Pennsylvania for Radiological Society of North America, President of Montour County Medical Society, member of CAT Scanner Purchasing Committee for Geisinger Medical Center, member DRG Facilitators Groups, Second Vice President, Pennsylvania Radiological Society. He also had the pleasure of being the Advisor to Mahoning Township Supervisors on general Issues of public and radiological health.
Dr. Funkhouser enjoyed spending time with family, four-wheeling, fly fishing, gardening, golfing, photography, sailing, skeet and target shooting. His greatest pleasure was bringing beauty to the world by planting trees, flower and grafting plants to create unique colors.
He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Joan and Robert P. Gearhart of Flinton, PA, niece Jamie of Smithsburg MD., niece Anita R. Bussard and husband John of Hagerstown, MD, great nephew Major Joshua J. Smith and wife, Candice and great grandchildren, Joshua Smith II, Magealene M. Smith and Jonah J. Smith of Kansas.
He is preceded in death by his father, George W. Funkhouser, his mother Ruth Jenkins Funkhouser, nephew Robert D. Gearhart and great grand-daughter Wendi Lyn Gearhart of Smithsburg, MD.
Dr. George R. Funkhouser's compassion, respect, knowledge and dedication will be greatly missed by his family, the entire medical community and those he helped along the way of life.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm on Thursday, November 15, 2018 at Rest Haven Funeral Home, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown. Burial will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery with military honors. Friends and family will be received one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
