Belva Snyder

November 3, 1918 — November 26, 2012

Belva Snyder, 94, of Hagerstown, died on Monday, Nov. 26, 2012, at Meritus Medical Center.

Born Nov. 3, 1918, in Shenandoah, Va., Belva was the daughter of the late Guy Hoch and Ollie Pearl (Davis) Hoch.

Belva went the extra mile for the Democratic Party holding such offices as first vice president, sergeant at arms of the United Democrats of Western Maryland, Western District Chairman of Washington County (last surviving member) and president of the Hagerstown Democratic Women's Club. She served as president several times during the past 50 years. One of her special skills was organizing luncheons for Democratic functions. Other activities were president and charter member of Friendship Homemakers, president of the Washington County Heart Association, president of the Hammond Organ Society and troop leader for Girl Scouts of America.

Belva showed her generosity to her family members by providing financial help and support whenever it was needed. Christmas was always a special time for her. She spent days shopping for just the right presents for family and friends.

Belva always carried a big pocketbook when visiting a buffet in order to provide food to her beloved animals. Smokey, a family member's dog, helped himself to a piece of chicken from her pocketbook. He made it a habit of checking her purse every time she came to visit.

Nutrition was very important to her, so it wasn't unusual when she took a four year homemaker's course through the University of Maryland Extension Office.

Belva is survived by three daughters, Sandra Turtle and husband, James, of Philadelphia, Pa., Andrea Clopper of Hagerstown and Jonnette Reuschling and husband, Ed, of Charleston, S.C.; and one son, John Snyder and wife, Lois, of Hagerstown. She has also been blessed with eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Belva was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 30, 2012, at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with Rev. Kevin Munroe officiating. Friends will be received one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to R.E.A.C.H., 140 W. Franklin St., Ste 300, Hagerstown, MD 21740.

Belva didn't just coast through life, she pushed onward and upward and even with many trials and tribulations, her life was still a sweet success.
