Betty Nuckles Gardner Thier

Betty Nuckles Gardner Thier, 91, of Hagerstown passed away Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2018, at her home.

Born April 16, 1926, in Hagerstown, she was the oldest daughter of the late Evers Worth Nuckles and Evelyn Louise (Webb) Nuckles.

In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her second husband, Stanley Robert Thier; and three siblings, Jerry Nuckles, Dawn Nuckles and Jack Nuckles.

Betty was a 1945 graduate of Hagerstown High School.

In addition to being a homemaker, Betty worked as a beautician and was a licensed Maryland Realtor.

Betty was an avid card player and enjoyed playing bridge with a women's group for many years. She especially enjoyed playing cards with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Betty also enjoyed playing golf as a former member of the "Ladies Nine Hole Group."

She belonged to Curves for many years and was the oldest member of the group for a period of time attending more than 1,500 times.

She was an amazing cook and enjoyed preparing meals and special treats for her family well into her late 80s. She was a gracious hostess and enjoyed entertaining her family and friends.

She was an amazing mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Betty is survived by three children, Blair Gardner, Todd Gardner, and Kristin Gardner Holden and husband, Jack, all of Hagerstown; three grandchildren, Ashley Holden of Hagerstown, Jennifer Holden Messaros of Natrona Heights, Pa., and Jessie Gardner of Falling Waters, W.Va.; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert Nuckles of San Mateo, Calif., and John Nuckles of Baltimore; a sister, Barbara Wilson of Annapolis; and her first husband, Albert L. Gardner Jr. of Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends Sunday, Jan. 21, 2018, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Betty's home.
