Charles Harding Chuck Noren

Charles Harding "Chuck" Noren, 95, of Hagerstown, passed away on Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at his home.

Born January 25, 1922, in Chicago, he was the son of the late Walter Gustaf and Agnes Jeanett (Anderson) Noren.

Chuck was a York High graduate in Elmhurst, IL. He obtained his BS in mining engineering at the University of North Dakota and a MS degree in mining engineering from the University of Missouri.

Chuck was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force as a 2nd Lieutenant. He served as an officer in the Pacific Theater during WWII. During the war, he was responsible for weather prognostication to aid bombing runs at the American airport in New Guinea.

He retired after 34 years from Dupont as an explosive engineer, where he had numerous patents and publications on rock mechanics and explosives. Chuck performed research at Potomac River Works in the Developmental Lab in Falling Waters, WV. He was directly involved with the explosive removal of Ripple Rock, a underwater mountain in British Columbia, that had been interfering with the shipping lanes. This project was considered the largest nuclear explosion of its time.

Chuck was an avid Redskins fan. He stayed current by reading two newspapers a day and playing sudoku. After retirement, he enjoyed staying in touch with his DuPont friends.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 69 years, Virginia K. "Ginny" Noren; two sons, Dr. Charles R. and Stephen E. Noren; two sisters, Agnes and Dorothy; and two brothers, Wally and Robert.

Chuck is survived by a daughter, Kathryn Snee and husband Dr. Thomas, of Washington, PA; daughter-in-law Sherry Noren Elliott of Lewes, DE.; 6 grandchildren; Dr. Ryan Snee and wife Lynn of Canonsburg, PA., Dr. Brent Snee and wife Karyn of Denver, CO., Jeffrey Snee and wife Melissa of Wexford, PA., Chad Snee and wife Lauren of Denver, CO., Tara Jackson and husband Scott of Singapore, Dr. Nicole Hooten and husband Robert of Ellicott City, MD., 13 great-grandchildren; and his special friend and caregiver, Brenda Cole.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Sunday, August 13, 2017 at Rest Haven Funeral Home, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown. with Rev. Michael Seger officiating. Inurnment will be private in Rest Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service and again following the service for a luncheon at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Chuck's name to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742.
