Clara Dickson Wagner, 88, a resident of The Leland of Laurel Run, Waynesboro, PA; formerly of Hagerstown and Frederick, MD, and York County, PA, passed away on Saturday, January 3, 2015, at Meritus Medical Center, Hagerstown, MD.

Born October 11, 1926, in Nathan's Creek, Ashe County, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Edgar Dixon and the late Clara Annis Elliott Dixon.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Walter Edward Wagner in 1993 and their son Daniel Thomas Wagner in 2004. She was also preceded in death by brothers Harold, Leslie, French and Charles Dixon, and sister Mary Frances Hartsoe.

She is survived by daughter M. Carolyn Perrygo and her husband John; and son Mark E. Wagner and his wife Mary Anna, all of Hagerstown, MD; and daughter-in-law Barbara S. Wagner of Felton, PA. She is also survived by 4 grandchildren: Amanda K. Haddaway and her husband John, Woodsboro, MD; Kristina M. Wagner, Felton, PA; and Heather E. Wagner and Matthew E. Wagner, both of Hagerstown, MD. Additionally, she is survived by sister Maxine Beall and her husband Vernon, Clintonville, WI; and sister Dorothy Andrus, Red Lion, PA; as well as many nieces and nephews (including godson V. Edward Beall, Jr.) and many great-nieces and great-nephews; and sisters-in-law Ruth Dixon Hurt, Jefferson, NC; Shirley Dixon, Cove, AR; Barbara Wagner, Peoria, AZ; and Charlotte Overmiller, Red Lion, PA. Clara is also survived by her dearest friends Marilyn and Larry Marshall and Nancy Warrenfeltz.

She was trained as a registered nurse through the U.S. Public Health Service's Cadet Nurse Corps in Charlotte, NC, during World War II. She continued her nursing career in numerous settings, including school, hospital, private medical office, and public health locations in Pennsylvania, Arkansas, and Maryland. She retired from the Frederick County Health Department in 1990. She was a Frederick County Master Gardener, having gardened from childhood throughout her entire life in the United States and in Iran. She was published in several magazines and interviewed for her gardening expertise and she was often sought out for gardening, houseplant, and landscaping advice. Clara was an accomplished baker, seamstress, knitter, and quilter, as well as an avid reader. She treasured her fellow nurses in the Steel Magnolias, the residents and staff of The Leland, and neighbors wherever she lived.

A service will be held on Monday, January 12, 2015, at 1:00 p.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Avenue, Hagerstown, MD, with the Rev. Dr. Stephen D. Robison officiating. A reception will follow. Interment will be in the Prospect United Methodist Church cemetery in Gatchelville, PA, at the convenience of her family.
