Clarence and Betty Gehr

June 17, 1922 — November 7, 2017

A Graveside Memorial Service will be held for Clarence (Ned) Edward Gehr, Jr. and his wife, Betty Jean Proctor-Gehr on Saturday, the 14th of April, 2018, 1:00 PM at Rest Haven Cemetery in Hagerstown, Maryland. The Rev. Dr. A. Robert Cook will be officiating.

A native of Washington County, Maryland, Ned was born on June 17, 1922 in what is now known as the Keller Home, at the corner of E. Baltimore and High Streets in Funkstown. The son of the former Isabelle Eena Adams of Beaver Creek and Clarence Edward Gehr, Sr. of Clear Spring, Neds ancestral roots in Washington County trace back to 1782, when the Adams moved from Adams County, Pennsylvania to Washington County, Maryland. As a child of 8 years old, Ned and his parents moved to Allegheny County, PA where Clarence Sr. went to work as an Agent for the C & O Railroad. Ned attended school, graduated, and enrolled at Carnegie Tech (which is now Carnegie Mellon) in the mechanical engineering program.

Betty Jean Proctor was born on March 9, 1921 in Allegheny County, PA. She lived her entire childhood there and after graduation from high school, attended and received a registered nursing certificate from Montefiore School of Nursing

Ned and Betty Jean met when he was a patient at Montefiore Hospital and the couple were married shortly before Ned was deployed to the South Pacific as part of a World War II Army Engineering Battalion in 1944. After leaving the Army, Ned and Betty Jean moved to Pittsburgh for a few years, finally settling in Toledo, Ohio where he worked for the Gulf Oil Company his entire adult career. Married for 65 years the two had five children. At least annually, the couple and their children travelled back to Washington County, Maryland to visit their Adams ancestors at the Green Meadows Farm, along the Beaver Creek and others family in Washington County.

After a long illness Betty Jean passed away on November 26, 2009 in Little Rock, AR. Still in good health, Ned did not want to bury Betty Jean in Maryland, alone. Since her death, her cremains have been lovingly cared for by her daughter, Nancy E. Gehr-Garner. Ned earned his heavenly wings on October 31, 2017.

Ned and Betty Jeans daughter, Nancy along with her husband, Michael Garner and their three children, Sean, April, and Kent would welcome any long-lost family, no matter how distant, to join them in laying Ned and Betty Jean to Eternal Rest.
