Clark A. Mayer

Clark A. Mayer of Hagerstown, Md. passed away, on Monday, 13 March 2017.

Born 28 November 1945 in Eureka, SD, the son of the late, Otto and Emma Mayer. He was of Protestant faith.

He graduated from Hosmer High School in 1963 in Hosmer, SD. After graduation he joined the United States Marine Corps. He was assigned the machine gunner MOS. In 1964 he went to the Orient and was part of Operation Shufly in Vietnam. Operation Shufly was early helicopter support for the South Vietnamese 11th Rangers and security for the DaNang airfield. On 8 March 1965, he became part of the 9th Marine Expeditionary Brigade that landed south of DaNang and officially began the Vietnam War. During the build-up, the operation changed from support and security to search and destroy missions. He left Vietnam in late 1965.

In 1966 he was selected for Embassy Duty and was successful in completing the training. He was posted at the U.S. Embassy in Paris, France from 1966 to 1969. That assignment saw a continued build-up in Vietnam, the onset of the Paris Peace Accords and a brief tour at the International Atomic Emergy Commission for Congressional hearings in Vienna, Austria.

In Paris he met Joan Gooden, from Delaware who was in the State Department Foreign Service. They married in 1969 and settled into ranching in South Dakota for a time. They then moved to Hagerstown where Clark went to school. After graduating, he founded Automated Sport Machines and officiated tennis from college to the professional ranks, including the finals of many events including the US Open. He retired from officiating in 2000. He continued to operate the tennis equipment company until 2010, selling the business and retiring.

He was a member of the American Legion, Leola SD, North American Rod and Gun Club, the 1st and 3rd Marine Divisions (Vietnam), Marine Embassy Security Association, and the Antietam Detachment of the Marine Corps League where he served in several positions, the last as Judge Advocate.

He is survived by his wife Joan of 48 years, daughter Tanya Mayer and son-in-law Steve Lutz. He loved his dear grand girls, Dana, Kira and Riley very much.

Besides his parents, his brother James O. Mayer preceded him in death. He leaves behind two sisters, Ruby Schilling and Gloria Schlaht, and one brother, Lester Mayer, all living in Denver. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews; and grand nieces and grand nephews of which he was very fond.

Family and friends are invited for visitation on Saturday, 18 March 2017 from 12:00 P.M. until 1:00 P.M. at Rest Haven Funeral Home, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave. Hagerstown.

Funeral services will follow on Saturday at 1:00 P.M. at the funeral home with Pastor Elizabeth Brookens-Sturman officiating. Interment and lunch will follow the service at Rest Haven. Military honors will be provided by the Antietam Detachment of the Marine Corps League.
