Dr. Phyllis Jeanne (Hamburg) Hunley

November 29, 1932 — October 8, 2020

Dr. Phyllis Jean Hamburg Hunley of Martinsburg passed away October 8, 2020 while under the care of the VA Medical Center Hospice unit. Born November 29, 1932 she was the daughter of John K. and Mary Agnes Hamburg of Hagerstown, Md. She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers John and Donald Hamburg and a sister Lorraine Carey all of Hagerstown.

Dr. Hunley graduated from Hagerstown High School in 1950 and earned her BA degree from Frostburg College in 1954. While in college, she played semi-professional woman’s baseball. She received her Master’s Degree from George Washington University in Columbus, Ohio and later returned to Ohio to the Union Institute. There she obtained her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology in 1992.

Phyllis proudly served in the US Navy from 1954-1956 and was stationed at the Pentagon during her service time. She received the rank of Lt. J.G. while serving in the Navy. She later served in the Army Reserve Unit in Hagerstown until her retirement in 1994.

Dr. Hunley retired from the VA Medical Center in 1985. There she served veterans for more than 20 years as a Clinical Psychologist.

She is survived by a sister, Audrey Yvonne Hall of Greensburg, Pa. Her son Eugene R. Hunley and wife Deborah of Martinsburg. Two granddaughters, Lauren Hunley of Billings, MT and Morgan Seeley and husband Jeremiah. Two Great Grandchildren, Anne and David Seeley of Martinsburg. She is also survived by multiple nieces and nephews reaching the four corners of the U.S.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 15, 2020 from 5:00 until 8:00 P.M. at Rest Haven Funeral Home, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown.

Graveside services will be conducted on Friday, October 16, 2020 at 3:00 P.M. at Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown with Dr. Howard G. Malin officiating.

Family requests that memorial contributions to honor Dr. Hunley be made to the Martinsburg Public Library or Berkeley County Senior Services.
