Earl Downin Huyett, Jr.

Earl Downin Huyett, Jr. AKA to many as "Deedle" of Hagerstown, died on Monday, March 26, 2018 at Doey's House.

Born in Hagerstown at the Washington County Hospital on July 4, 1932, he was the son of the late Earl Downin Huyett and Alma Baker Huyett Suffecool.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Joyce Ann Poole Huyett, whom he married on Sunday, November 18, 1956.

He was of Lutheran faith and graduated from "Old Hagerstown High School" with the class of 1950.

After high school he attended Hagerstown Junior College (now HCC) and the University of Maryland before enlisting into the Army in 1953 during the Korean War. While in the Army, he served in the ASA with the VII Corp. in Germany, attached to the 6th Armored Cavalry, working to protect the border between East and West.

After he was discharged in 1956, he returned to Hagerstown and had another stint at the HJC and University of Maryland. Earl graduated from The Maryland State Police Academy in 1958 and served mainly in Howard and Washington Counties until 1963 when he became associated with the State Farm Insurance Company.

Beginning in Hagerstown as a claims adjuster, he quickly moved up to supervisor and superintendent, opting then to agency. Transferred to the Baltimore/DC area in 1975, he and his family lived in Olney, MD., where he was an Agency Manager. After seven years of longing to return to the mountains, he served as an agent in the Martinsburg, WV area which he enjoyed for eighteen years before his retirement in February 1997. During his service with State Farm, he earned his Certified Life Underwriter designation through American College.

He was Secretary, President, and District Representative of the Martinsburg Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a member of the Berkeley County Planning Commission, where he served as Treasurer and a member of the American Legion, AmVets, DAV and Hagerstown Elks.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Ann Lynn Huyett of Germantown, MD.; three sons, Patrick Brian Huyett and his wife Anna Reluzco Huyett of Ellicott City, MD., John Michael Huyett and his wife Sheila Henderson Huyett of Leesburg, VA., and Andrew Downin Huyett and his wife Gale Lynn Huyett of Kernersville, NC.; nine grandchildren, Lauren Raquel Kantor and her husband Nicholas S. Kantor, Meagan Maria Huyett, her twin Ryan Linwood Huyett, Quentin Brian Huyett, John Earl Huyett, Luke Michael Huyett, Nicole Elizabeth Huyett, Matthew Lewis Huyett, and Natalie Virginia Huyett; a great-grandson, Henry Scott Kantor; a sister, Jean Yvonne Huyett Metz of Monroeville, PA.; a sister-in-law, Joan Lynn Poole Bachtell and her husband James Brown Bachtell of Hagerstown; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

He was also preceded in death by his sister, Patricia Ann Huyett Evenson, RN, who passed away May 1975 at the age of 46 of breast cancer.

He was cremated and a memorial service will be held at 3:00pm on Saturday, March 31, 2018 at Rest Haven Funeral Home, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with Pastor Doug Wagner officiating. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.

Inurnment will follow the service in Rest Haven Cemetery with military honors.
