Earl William Jr. Hepperle

Earl William "Bud" Hepperle Jr., 88, of Hagerstown, passed away Sunday, Dec. 26, 2010, at Golden Living Center, where he has been a resident since February of this year.

Born May 2, 1922, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Earl William and Mary (Needy) Hepperle.

Earl served in the Army during World War II in the chemical warfare division, but spent most of his time in Australia.

He was a lifetime member of the South End Fire Hall and a member of the Funkstown American Legion, Post No. 211.

He has been a member of St. Andrew's United Methodist Church for nearly 50 years.

In his early years, he worked for Fairchild Aircraft, but became a self-employed contractor, building many homes throughout Hagerstown and the vicinity.

During much of his later life, he and his wife spent winters in Florida, where he enjoyed bowling, shuffleboard, biking, swimming and his favorite hobby, playing cards. Earl had such a great outlook on life and loved everyone he met.

He is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Betty Jane (Norris) West Hepperle; a son, Stephen Hepperle and wife, Sharonlee, of Elkton, Md.; a stepdaughter, Cheryl Grove and husband, Kenneth, of Hagerstown; three granddaughters, Amber, Stephanie and Mallory Hepperle, all of Hagerstown; two stepgrandsons, Craig Grove of Hagerstown, and Ryan Grove and wife, Sarah, of Frederick, Md.; a stepgreat-granddaughter, Katherine â??Katieâ? Grove; and two sisters, Doris Friedrich of Williamsport, Md., and Phyllis Ringer of Fallston, Md.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Bille (Miller) Oden Hepperle; a stepson, William Oden; and two sisters, Marvian Daley and Jane Ayers Guessford.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2010, at St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, 1020 Maryland Ave., Hagerstown, with the Rev. Michael Henning officiating. Friends will be received one hour prior to the service at the church.

Burial will be private and held at the convenience of the family.
