Edmund V. Niklewski

Dr. Edmund V. Niklewski, 80, of Hagerstown, passed away Friday, Feb. 25, 2011, at his home.

Born in 1930, in Nanticoke, Pa., he was the son of the late Kazmer and Anna (Brodzinski) Niklewski.

He was a captain in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War era, serving as chief of psychiatric service at Madigan General Hospital in Tacoma, Wash.

Dr. Niklewski was a 1952 graduate of Wilkes College, Wilkes-Barre, Pa.; a 1956 graduate of Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, Pa.; chief resident at Williamsport Hospital, Williamsport, Pa., 1957 to 1958; and completed his psychiatric residency at Norristown State Hospital, Norristown, Pa., 1958 to 1961.

From 1963 to 1978, Dr. Niklewski was a staff psychiatrist at Brook Lane Psychiatric Center, Hagerstown, where he also served as medical director from 1967 to 1974. In 1978, he began a private practice of psychiatry at Antietam Psychiatric Associates, Hagerstown. During this time, he was also medical director of the mental health unit and the Alzheimer's program at Washington County Hospital. Dr. Niklewski retired as a psychiatrist in 2006 after 45 years of service in this community.

He was a lifelong member of the Washington County Medical Society, serving as president from 1985 to 1986. He also held lifelong memberships in Med-Chi of Maryland, American Medical Association, American Psychiatric Association and Southern Medical Association.

He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Roberta â??Bobbieâ? (Woods) Niklewski; a daughter, Carol Posthumus of Clear Spring, Md.; two sons, Richard Niklewski of Buford, Ga., and David Niklewski of Laurel, Md.; a granddaughter, Shanna Corbin of Philadelphia; two grandsons, Jason Bender of Hagerstown and Chris Niklewski of Toledo, Ohio; and five great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 5, 2011, in Rest Haven Cemetery with the Rev. Andrew S. Young, chaplain with Hospice of Washington County, officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the graveside service at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel.

Ed was a member of the Hagerstown Civil War Round Table for over 35 years.
