Estella May Whitehead

Estella May Whitehead, 92, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 31, 2012.

Born Estella May Grove, Oct. 10, 1920, in Cumberland, Md., she was the daughter of William A. and Nellie Grove.

She lived in Hagerstown, Md., for many years before moving to Winchester, Va., with her husband of 36 years, F.W. â??Whiteyâ? Whitehead, where they operated Whiteyâ??s Twin Diner for several years. The family then moved to Palm Beach County, Fla., and operated Whiteyâ??s Super Market until 1962, before retiring and moving back to the Hagerstown area.

Estella was preceded in death by her husband.

She is survived by her brother, Earl D. Grove of Hagerstown; sister, Eva Holland of Williamsport, Md.; daughter, Carol McMillan of Enid, Okla., who provided her with much love and care during her declining years; daughter, Patsy Mackereth of Hagerstown; son, F.W. â??Willâ? Whitehead of Greencastle, Pa.; son, L. David Whitehead of Altoona, Pa.; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Brother, Oscar Grove, preceded her in death, as did sisters, Bertha Guessford, Ethel Shantz and Alice Davis.

Estella was well-known for her southern-style cooking and her â??award-winningâ? homemade breads, jellies and canned peaches. She also enjoyed needlepoint, embroidery and other needle craft, for which she won many awards and ribbons.

Family will receive friends Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2012, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown. The family will conduct a private graveside service the following morning at 10 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the American Diabetes Association in Estellaâ??s name.
