Franklin Suter Stanley

Franklin Suter Stanley, 92, passed away Sunday, December 13, 2020 at Ravenwood Nursing Center.

He was born in Hagerstown, MD to the Late Frank Suter and Mary Frances (Stanley) Suter on June 24, 1928.

Frank graduated from Hagerstown High School in 1946.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956 plus eight years in the Reserves. He attended leadership school at Camp Gordon. He was assigned to the Signal Corp as a Cryptographer Specialist.

Frank was baptized in St. Paul’s Methodist Church now known as John Wesley United Methodist Church, 129 N. Potomac Street. He was an active member attending Sunday School and later the youth fellowship. Thru the years he sang in the choir; acted as a counter, served on the Board of Trustees and served as an usher. He also supported Joyce with her various activities. He could be counted on to volunteer when needed.
Frank was active in the community. He was a former member of the Elks, Moose, and Hagerstown Lion’s Club. He is a current member of American Legion, Post 42 on Northern Avenue. Frank was also a member of Traveler’s Protective Association (T.P.A.) Post 11 and served in several posts as Secretary, Treasurer. He was also a volunteer with the TPA Highway Clean-Up crew.

Frank was employed by The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company (A&P) for 48 years. He began as a clerk/cashier. Served as Captain of the night crew. He was promoted to assistant manager and that was his title until he retired. He worked at all three locations in Hagerstown as well as Berryville and Winchester, VA.

Frank was very active in Children’s Safety Village as a volunteer and served on their Board of Directors. He also volunteered at the Hagerstown Roundhouse Museum and he served on their Board of Directors.

Travel was greatly enjoyed by Frank. Frank and Joyce went on cruises to most of the islands in the Caribbean. They also visited Columbia, South America, Mexico, Bermuda, Canada, Scotland, England. Many of these trips were shared with their daughter Frances and her husband, Sam. They also visited many of the states including California, Nevada, Michigan, and all the states along the East Coast. Frank and Joyce frequently traveled to New York to see Broadway plays and for shopping. They enjoyed going to museums to see foreign exhibits; like the Imperial Tombs of China, The Pleasures of Mie Jei, King Tut and others.

Frank liked working in the yard, enjoyed painting, photography, and reading. He had a huge collection of books and collected the whole series of some of his favorite author such as Sax Rohmer and James Michener.

Frank is survived by his loving wife Joyce of 67 years; daughter Frances Irene (Stanley) Brown and her husband Samuel Kenneth Brown.

Friends will be received from 10 – 11AM on Monday December 28th 2020 at the funeral home, due to Covid-19 restrictions only 10 persons may attend at a time, social distancing and face coverings are required. Funeral services and burial in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park will be private.
