Frederick Charles Thornton, 67, passed away at Meritus Medical Center on Friday, April 11, 2014.

Born April 3, 1947 in Hagerstown, MD, Fred was the son of the late Frederick Leland Thornton and Martha Louise Thornton.

He was a 1965 graduate of Kimball Union Academy, Meriden, NH, and graduated from Shepherd University with a degree in Economics. He was an Air Force veteran, having served a tour of duty in Vietnam with the hospital at Cam Ranh Bay.

After graduation, Fred became a realtor and subsequently worked for the National Alliance of Business as Manager of Employment & Training and Veterans Representative. He later worked for the State of Maryland in various departments including the Unemployment Office and retired from the Department of Rehabilitation Services in 2002.

Fred was an avid reader and enjoyed Merl Reagle's as well as The New York Times' crossword puzzles. He had a passion for World War II history and was a collector of classic motion picture & film memorabilia. He was a past member of the American Film Institute and the film society, Cineophiles. Fred was a member of the Morris Frock Post of the American Legion and Fountain Head Country Club.

He will be remembered for his infectious laugh, quick wit and encyclopedic knowledge of a wide variety of topics. Fred was a kind, thoughtful, and wonderful man and was loved by many friends and family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Fred is survived by his loving wife, Allison; daughter, Sarah Thornton; and stepdaughter, Christina Heard.

A graveside service will be held at Rest Haven Cemetery on Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. The family will also receive friends at Fountain Head Country Club from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Humane Society of Washington County, 10311 Maugansville Rd., Hagerstown, MD 21740.
