George William Martin

June 7, 1926 — December 16, 2018

George William Martin, 92, of Hagerstown, passed away into glory Sunday afternoon, December 16, 2018 at Doey's House in Hagerstown.
Born in Greencastle, PA, on June 7, 1926, he was preceded in death by his mother, the late Elise Witmer Martin and father, the late Ira L. Martin, Sr., along with his brothers, Leroy and Ira, Jr.; and sisters, Margaret Palmer and Hazel Angel.
He is survived by his wife, Mary E. Martin of 63 1/2 years; son, Joseph W. Martin, both of Hagerstown; his sister, Elsie Bingaman of Waynesboro; and nieces and nephews.
George was a veteran of WWII, being enlisted in the Navy and stationed in Australia.
After the war, he worked for Fairchild Industries as a tool and die maker; Boeing Vertol in Philadelphia, PA, as a tool layout designer; and as a quality control inspector for Mack Trucks for 29 1/2 years retiring in 1990.
He was an avid student of the Bible, taking dozens of Biblical correspondence courses. George enjoyed telling people about Jesus everywhere he went. He volunteered in conducting church services in nursing homes and visiting shut-ins; doing various church work; and was on the board of The Fishermen's Net for many years. He loved traveling all over the United States.
During his past-time, he took pleasure feeding and watching the birds and squirrels.
He was a member of the Spirit of Christ Community Church in Chambersburg, PA.
A service will be held at 1:00pm on Thursday, December 20, 2018 at Rest Haven Funeral Home, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with the Rev. Robert Kochert officiating. The family will receive friends and family one hour prior to the service and again following the burial. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery.
