Gertrude Elizabeth Morin

November 15, 1926 — September 26, 2011

Gertrude "Trudy" Elizabeth Ward Morin, of Hagerstown, passed away Sept. 26, 2011, at the age of 84.

She is survived by her three children, Anne Louise Morin, Teresa Janet Morin Huguenin and Robert Ward Morin; daughter-in-law, Victoria Gylys-Morin; six grandchildren, Lisa Maria Morin, Kristen Anne Morin, Robert Rimas Morin, John Gylys Morin, Brian Ward Huguenin and Sidney Ames Huguenin IV; and granddaughter-in-law, Lauren Wright Huguenin.

Trudy was born to Louise Hobbs Ward and Ernest Gordon Ward in her parents' house in Temiskaming, Quebec, on Nov. 15, 1926.

She was the youngest and last survivor of five siblings, Pearl Louise Ward, Lloyd Arthur Ward, John Hobbs Ward and Gordon George Ward.

She grew up in Quebec City. She enjoyed an athletic life as a skier, skater and high school basketball player, graduating high school at the age of 15. She also studied piano at the McGill Conservatory of Music, taking first place in the 1943 Dominion of Canada piano competition. During summers, she worked at the front desk of the Chateau Frontenac, where the 1944 Quebec Conference of World War II leaders was held. Winston Churchill would wave with a "V for Victory" sign as he passed her. There she also met Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and fondly remembered playing with his dog Fala.

She trained for a nursing career at the Jeffery Hale Hospital in Quebec City from 1944 to 1947. After graduation, she remained there to work in the maternity and pediatric wards. She put her nursing work on hold to start a family. She returned to nursing in 1961, working at the Western Maryland Hospital chronic-care facility, where she eventually became nursing supervisor, retiring in 1983.

She spent her post-retirement years enjoying travel in the company of her closest friends, helping to raise her grandchildren and working for charitable causes. She was on the board of directors for Girls Inc., a nonprofit organization designed to nurture young girls.

Trudy will always be remembered by her loved ones as having equanimity under adversity, a face that showed a life of love and laughter, and a dedication and passion for service to others.

A graveside service will he held Saturday, Oct. 1, at 1 p.m. at Rest Haven cemetery. The Rev. Ann Boyd of St. John's Episcopal Church will officiate.
