Gita L. Dhillon
June 16, 1934 — September 9, 2016
Gita Lilamani Dhillon was born in Moratuwa, Sri Lanka on June 16, 1934 to Rev. George Samuel and his beloved Laura Charlotte Mendis. Gita was a kind child blessed with wisdom, quick wit and most importantly, mischievousness. Those who knew her would agree those are only a few of the many gifts that were bestowed upon this amazing woman. She was the adored younger sister of Carmen, Lionel and Pete.
An avid learner, Gita earned Master’s Degrees in Nursing, Education, and Anthropology. She utilized her degrees by teaching hundreds of nurses at American University and delivering over one-thousand babies. Her career took her from Maryland to the Southwestern United States and overseas to Indonesia and India.
Gita served on the Presidential Committee Against Babies Having Babies and the World Health Organization. She also published a book on midwifery as well as several articles for the National Institutes of Health, American Journal of Nursing and others.
After retiring Gita volunteered at Hospice Caring, Inc. and was co-founder of Camp Caring, a children’s grief camp in Gaithersburg, MD.
Whether you knew her for a brief time or most of your life, we can all agree it was an impression of a lifetime. From providing advice on your love life, directing where to go for ice cream, or citing which Mel Gibson movie had the best butt shots, her wealth of knowledge was apparent.
Aside from her long list of accomplishments, it would be an absolute error to not mention her heart of gold. Many can attest to a moment where Gita either opened her home, her heart or pocketbook to those in need. Others mention her as the inspiration for going back to school, “leaving that man,” or becoming a nurse themselves.
Gita is survived by her sons Suchinder and Shaminder, daughters-in-love Randi and Naomi, grandchildren Shaun, Alex and Isabella, partner Paul Drummer as well as countless family members and dear friends.
While her journey on this earth has been brief, her memory will last for an eternity.
Services will be held at 3:30pm on Tuesday, September 20, 2016 at Otterbein United Methodist Church, 108 E. Franklin Street, Hagerstown, MD, with Pastors Elizabeth Jackson and Jim Miller officiating. Friends will be received at 2:00pm.
