H. Donald Don Dr. Hochstein

Herbert Donald "Don" Hochstein, 87, of Hagerstown, passed away Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at Brookdale Assisted Living. Born September 12, 1929, in Johnstown, Pa., he was the a son of the late Herbert C. and Catherine E. (Hess) Hochstein.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years, Virginia "Pat" F. Hochstein, who died February 8, 2017.
Don was a veteran of the US Army during the beginning of the Korean Conflict.
He was a 1949 graduate of Johnstown High School. Don went on to graduate from the Univ. of Maryland, College Park, in 1956 earning his BS degree, George Washington University in Washington DC, with a Master of Science degree in 1959, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1968 with a Master of Public Health degree, and his PhD, Doctor of Public Health in 1970.
Dr. Hochstein began his career at the National Institutes of Health in 1958 as a microbiologist, later transferring to the Food and Drug Administration. He remained with the FDA until his retirement in 1997. He has over 50 scientific publications.
Don was a member of the First Baptist Church of Rockville, Md. He had a passion for serving others. He and his late wife volunteered their time with the Bethesda Help organization. Family was Don's first priority in life. He also loved to garden and work in his yard. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting. Herbert and Pat considered themselves 'week-end farmers'. They enjoyed living on a small farm and the duties that come along with it. After they sold the farmette, they enjoyed time at their cottage in Manns Choice, Pa.
Don is survived by a son, Craig D. Hochstein, M.D. and wife Kimi; two daughters, Lisa Lynn Walker and husband Roger, Nancy P. Bittner and husband Neil; seven grandchildren, Zachary Lynn and wife Elizabeth, Gregory Lynn, Brent Hochstein, Audrey Hochstein, Matthew Bittner, Elizabeth Bittner, and Madeline Bittner; a great-grandson, Parker Bittner; a brother, Charles Hochstein; a sister, Vivian McDevitt; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00am on Friday, April 21, 2017, in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown. The family will receive friends following the burial at Rest Haven Funeral Home, 1601 PA Ave., Hagerstown.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in Don's name to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742.
We would like to thank Hospice of Washington County for the way they advocated for, cared for and supported our father and our family. Special thank you to Kelly Lilley, RN and the whole team of nurses and CNA's who were there all hours of the day and night with us as well as Rick Steele who spent many hours with both of our parents.
