Harriet “Jean” Harr

Jean (Weaver) Harr, 95, of Hagerstown MD passed away at her home on Saturday, July 23, 2022, surrounded by her family.
Jean was born on March 18, 1927, in Clear Spring MD to William Denton and Bertha Estella (Hose) Weaver. Jean was the last surviving member of their 13 children.
Jean graduated from Smithsburg High School where she was active in drama and sports and went on to graduate from the Washington County School of Nursing in 1949. She became head nurse of the neurosurgery floor at George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C.; and subsequently married Ernest (Buddy) Harr, who was in the United States Air Force. They married at Andrews Air Force Base on October 10, 1954, and moved to Hagerstown to raise their family.
Jean worked in many areas of nursing throughout her 53-year career, which included being a floor nurse at Washington County Hospital and Western Maryland Hospital, private duty nursing for several at home patients, industrial nursing at Grove Mfg., and administrative nursing at Julia Manor Nursing Home and Readers Nursing Home. She also served on the Board of Directors for Girls Inc. and the American Red Cross in Hagerstown.
Jean was a very active member of the Presbyterian church, serving in the district Presbytery and as an elder and youth fellowship coordinator at the Hagerstown church and then attending St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Williamsport, where she served in many capacities. She greatly enjoyed singing in the choir, playing hand bells, participating with Helping Hands, making crafts and roasting peanuts for bazaars, as well as being a prayer warrior. Jean was presented an Honorary Life Membership from the Presbyterian Women in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), Inc., in May 2017.
Jean enjoyed doing crafts and was especially known for the beautiful Barbie doll clothes she sewed for her daughters and their friends, as well as many years of painting ceramics. She loved to crochet and made many Afghans for wedding presents, as well as shawls for nursing home patients. Jean delighted in arranging and attending many luncheons for the Presbyterian Women’s Circle, for her nursing classmates and for her cousins. She loved family gatherings and took her family to Wolf Trap for musicals for over 15 years. Jean also enjoyed attending church activities, canning, bird watching, reading, doing word searches and puzzles and playing board games, mostly Rummikub, as well as listening to WJEJ.

She is survived by her children, Ernie and wife Karen, Jeff and wife Alice, Tina, Shelly and Peggy Horst; grandchildren Brooke Wade, Clayton, Rachel and husband Danny Hardy, Whitney and husband Andy Reichard, Lauren Horst and Alex Horst; great grandchildren Reilly, Landon, Caroline, Allison, Owen, Carys, Elliott, Jack and Finley.
