Harry Raymond Monninger

Harry Raymond "Mike" Monninger Jr., 85, of Hagerstown, died Sunday, May 20, 2012, at Homewood at Williamsport.

Born April 14, 1927, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Harry Sr. and Edna M. (Daley) Monninger.

Mike was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II, where he received Pacific and American Theater Medals, Philippine Liberation Ribbons and a Victory Medal.

He went back to graduate after the war in 1948 from Hagerstown High School.

He was a member of American Legion Post No. 42 Morris Frock of Hagerstown and a former member of the Hagerstown Elks.

Mike retired from The Herald-Mail after 39 years of service.

He is survived by his loving wife of more than 64 years, Dolores A. (Harbaugh) Monninger; three daughters, Barbara Nalley and husband, Terry, of Smithsburg, Kathy Dorwart and husband, Michael, of Waynesboro, and Laura Marfut and husband, Ed, of Hagerstown; five grandchildren, Brian Eberhart and wife, Christine, Mike Marfut and wife, Alex, Jennifer Nalley, Bret Marfut and Amanda Dorwart; and two great-grandchildren, Nicholas Eberhart and Ethan Eberhart.

In addition to his parents, Mike was preceded in death by two half sisters, Virginia Funk and Elizabeth Monninger.

A funeral service will be conducted at 7p.m. Thursday, May 24, 2012, at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with the Rev. Jeffrey L. Shull officiating. Inurnment will be private and held at the convenience of the family.

Friends will be received two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.
