Hugo W. Cardenas

Hugo W. Cardenas, 86, of Hagerstown, Md., passed away at Providence Place, Chambersburg, Pa., in the presence of his family on Nov. 28, 2011.

Born Aug. 11, 1925, in Arequipa, Peru, he settled in the United States in 1959.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Julia Fernandez Cardenas; four children and their spouses, Hugo and Caryl Cardenas, Juan and Julie Ann Cardenas, Steve and Laurie Cardenas, and Julie and Edward Bossart, along with 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Hugo was co-founder of the Peruvian North American Institute in Arequipa, Peru in 1954. The institute promoted good relationships between the United States and Peru. Due to the success of the institute, Hugo was invited to visit the United States by the U.S. Department of Education. During the trip, Hugo was offered a teaching position with Washington County Public Schools.

Hugo was a dedicated educator who taught Spanish at North Hagerstown High School for 30 years. Earning his Master of Arts degree in 1978, he also taught Spanish at Hagerstown Junior College, Millersville University and Hood College.

He was committed to excellence in serving the community in various organizations. He was a member of the Longmeadow Lions Club and was the recipient of the Melvin Jones Award. He volunteered at the American Red Cross and spent his free time translating for Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown Police Department, Washington County Sheriffâ??s Office and Maryland State Police. He also developed Spanish summer camps at Millersville University and Hagerstown Junior College for high school students.

In addition to his love of teaching, he had a great passion for the game of soccer. He established the soccer team at North Hagerstown High School, was co-founder of Hagerstown Youth Soccer and also started the soccer team at Hagerstown Junior College.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with the Rev. George A. Limmer officiating. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery.

Friends will be received at the funeral home on Friday evening from 6 to 9 p.m.
