Irene J. Munson

Irene J. (Carbaugh) Munson, 99 of Hagerstown, passed away on Tuesday morning, September 3, 2013 at Ravenwood Nursing Home where she had been a resident since November 2007.
Born February 20, 1914 in Hagerstown she was the daughter of the late Charles F. and Maude I. (Ridenour) Carbaugh. In addition to her parents she also was preceded in death by her loving husband in January of 1969, Floyd E. Munson, Sr. whom she married March 7, 1939.
She graduated with honors from Washington County Hospital in 1936, having received all A's in training for 36 months. At graduation she was awarded the Alumni Award and the Doctors Award. Irene made 92% on her state boards. In those days the student nurses attended classes and worked on the floor. She became the charge nurse in July 1930 on the surgical floor. At one time she ordered all the medicines for the hospital. She was employed with WCH for 34 years.
While busy nursing she also loved being a mother to three children, Floyd E. Munson, Jr. and wife Barbara A., Janice M. Seekford and husband Harold W. and C. Jean Bercaw and husband Kenneth K. She and her husband built their home on Salem Avenue in 1939 and lived there until her move to Ravenwood.
She became president of the Washington Street P.T.A., Secretary of the Salem Avenue P.T.A. and Homeroom Mother. Later she did volunteer work to help students with reading disabilities. She enjoyed gardening.
The Shiloh E.U.B. Church is where the family attended church and all were very active and she taught Sunday school. She joined St. John's Episcopal Church in 1969 and was a member of the St. John's Guild, the Altar Guild and Daughter's of the King, she also had worked at the Turnover Shop until it closed.
In addition to her children she also leaves behind, five grandsons Lloyd Beard,III, Kirk Seekford, Jason Beard, Mac Seekford and Stephen Munson.
Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, September 6, 2013 at 10:30 A.M. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown with the Rev. Ann Boyd officiating. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery.
Friends will be received at the funeral home on Thursday from 7-9 P.M.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions many be made to the Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742 or to St. John's Episcopal Church, 101 South Prospect St., Hagerstown, MD 21740.
