James Adam Gilbert

ames Adam Gilbert, 82, of Hagerstown, passed away, Monday, July 23, 2012, at Golden Living Center, Hagerstown.

Born May 7, 1930 in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Wendelin F. and Eva (Benner) Gilbert Sr.

Mr. Gilbert had attended St. Ambrose Elementary School and was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Randallstown, MD.

He was a four year veteran of the US Navy where he was an aircraft mechanic helper.

He retired after 25 years of service as a detective for the Baltimore City Police Department, after his retirement he worked with the Attoney General's office with the Medicaid Fraud Unit, and worked as a major league scout for the Baltimore Orioles where he was inducted into the Orioles scouting hall of fame. He also, along with Cal Ripken, Sr. ran the Cal Ripken baseball camp at St. Mary's College. He was at one time the manager of the Oriolelanders baseball team which is a showcase baseball team of high school aged players sponsored by the Orioles.

He also was a member of the B.P.O.Elks Lodge No. 378, Hagerstown and the F.O.P. Lodge No.3, Baltimore.

He is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Blanche L. (Shatzer) Gilbert; one son, Thomas P. Gilbert (Kathleen) of Glenville, WV; one daughter, Teresa "Terry" Davis (Richard) of White Hall, MD; one step daughter, Cathy M. Inkeles (Andrew) of Gaithersburg, MD; four grandchildren, Mikayla, Clair and Daniel Gilbert and Hope Davis; two step grandchildren, Heather Sylvester (Kenny) and Lauren Ricciardelli (Eric); five great-grandchildren, Tyler, Nathaniel, Cameron, Colton and Chase; A nephew who was like a brother to him, Robert Ackerman (Barbara) of Reisterstown, MD and a niece whom he also grew up with, Shirl Ackerman-Ross (Jack) of Delaware.

Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, July 27, 2012 at 1:00 P.M. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown with the Rev. Gregg Meserole officiating.

Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery where military honors will be accorded by the honor guard.

Friends will be received at the funeral home on Thursday from 7-9 P.M
