Jane S. Guyton

Jane S. Guyton (92) passed from this life on August 27, 2020. She was born on September 17, 1927 and was the daughter of the late Ralph D. Strevig and Elsie M. (Tawney) Strevig.

She graduated from Hagerstown High School in 1945. She then graduated from Hood College in 1949 with a BS degree in English. In 1968, she received her MS degree from Shippensburg College. Jane was employed by Washington County Public Schools for 33 years serving as High School English teacher, Supervisor of English and Reading, Assistant High School Principal and High School Principal. She retired in 1991 as Principal of North Hagerstown High School with the distinction of being the first woman High School Principal in Washington County. In 2008, she received the distinguished Woman of the Year Award from Hagerstown Business and Professional Women’s Club.

She is survived by her husband of almost 70 years, H. Gerald Guyton, two sons Jonathan T. Guyton (Michelle) of Minneapolis and Joel C. Guyton (Betty Sue) of Williamsport and two grandsons Andrew D. Guyton and Jeremy D. Guyton of Minneapolis. She was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church serving on Church Council and the Mutual Ministry Committee and was a regular attendee of the weekly Bible Study group. During her retirement, she enjoyed traveling with her husband throughout the U.S. They visited all 50 of the U.S. state capitols and loved visiting many U.S. national parks. She enjoyed attending the summer concerts of Hagerstown Municipal Band in Hagerstown City Park and the MSO concerts in the Maryland Theater. She also greatly enjoyed radio and TV station WETA in Washington, D.C.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Micah’s Backpack Fund at Trinity Lutheran Church, 15 Randolph Ave., Hagerstown, Maryland 21740.

Due to the current Covid-19 pandemic, private graveside services will be conducted at the convenience of the family.

A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at a later date.
