Jean DeVore Calhoun

December 19, 1928 — August 11, 2011

Jean DeVore Calhoun, 82, of Hagerstown, passed away Thursday, Aug. 11, 2011, at her home, surrounded by her beloved family.

Born Dec. 19, 1928, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Austin Bryan and Leona Gwendolyn (Buskirk) DeVore.

Mrs. Calhoun was a 1946 graduate of Hagerstown High School and attended Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Va.

She retired as a administrator for the Maryland State Board of Election Supervisors of Washington County.

Mrs. Calhoun was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was in the church's Christian Service Group.

She was a member of the Morris Frock American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and was an avid bridge player with several bridge clubs.

She is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, William Carl Calhoun; a daughter, Gayle Calhoun Waltersdorf of Hagerstown; three sons, Michael Stuart Calhoun and wife, Cathy, of Colonial Heights, Va., James Wilson Calhoun and wife, Debbie, of Big Pool, and Timothy Blaine Calhoun and wife, Barbara, of Hagerstown; a sister-in-law, Mary Jane Viar of Hagerstown; five grandchildren, Collin A. Calhoun of Old Town, Maine, Gregory W. Calhoun and wife, Sondra, of Dahlonega, Ga., James DeVore Waltersdorf of Lynnbrook, N.Y., Kelsey J. Calhoun of Colonial Heights and Laura A. Calhoun of Hagerstown.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Louise Mattenson.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 19, 2011, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Hagerstown, with the Rev. Eric Norgard officiating. A reception will be held in the fellowship hall following the service.

Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery. Serving as honorary pallbearers are Robert F. Zeigler, Sam T. Hankey and Les Powlen.

Friends will be received Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown.
