Jean Elizabeth Clark

December 9, 1925 — March 30, 2010

Jean Elizabeth Clark entered into God's eternal care on Tuesday, March 30, 2010. She was 84 years old.

Jean was born in Hagerstown on 9 Dec., 1925, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. R. A. Highbarger.

The former Jean Highbarger graduated from Hagerstown High School in the class of 1943 and earned her Bachelor of Science degree in 1947 from the University of Maryland, where she was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and Alpha Lamda Delta honorary fraternity.

That year, she married Herbert E. Clark, who was a student also. After graduation, she was employed by the C&P Telephone of Washington, D.C., for several years.

Her husband graduated from the University of Maryland in 1949 and because of his career as an Army officer, the couple moved frequently. Their older daughter was born in Hagerstown; another daughter and son, in Georgia. Following a period of living in many states and three years in the Panama Canal Zone, the family returned to Washington County.

At that time, Jean began working with her optometrist father, as an optician. She was also secretary and a vice-president of the Negley Realty Corporation. Following the closing of Dr. Highbarger's office and the Negley corporation, she worked as a Realtor with the Patterson Real Estate agency.

Mrs. Clark was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church, a member of the Mid-Maryland Alumnae association of Kappa Kappa Gamma, the Antietam chapter of National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and the American Association of University Women.

Her husband, Lt. Col. Clark, preceded her in death on Sept. 14, 2009, after 62 years of marriage.

She is survived by two daughters, Bonnie Lee Dowd of Lacey, Wash., and Pamella E. Gillette of Ashland, Va.; and one son, R. Douglas Clark of Williamsport, Md. In addition, there are two granddaughters, Miriam Dowd of Madrid, Spain, and Elizabeth Gillette of Roanoke, Va.; and two grandsons, Herbert James Clark of Shepherdstown, W.Va., and Alex Gillette of Nashville, Tenn.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 3, 2010, at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with the Rev. Eric Norgard officiating. Burial will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
