John Edwin Sr. Evans

January 9, 1922 — September 27, 2011

John E. "Jack" Evans Sr., of Hagerstown, passed away peacefully on Sept. 27, 2011, at his home. He was 89. Born Jan. 9, 1922, in Hagerstown, he was the youngest son of the late Robert Leslie and Ruth (Ford) Evans.

Raised in Hagerstown, he attended Hagerstown High School and Hagerstown Business College.

Jack was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II on the USS J. William Ditter, a destroyer/minelayer.

He retired in 1981 after 41 years of service at Fairchild Republic as supervisor of Engineering Reproduction, where he was instrumental in the design and development of the PT-19 trainer, C-82 Packet, C-119 Flying Boxcar, A-10 Thunderbolt II and many other planes, some of which are still in service today. Jack was also the owner/operator of Evans' Reproduction in Greencastle, Pa., and in the mid 1940s owned the malt shop in Greencastle's square.

Raised in the Roman Catholic faith, Jack attended Saint Mary's and St. Ann's while accepting Jesus Christ as lord and savior in 1975. He was a lifetime member of Elks Lodge No. 378, American Legion Post No. 42 and the North American Rod and Gun Club.

On July 19, 1941, Jack married his sweetheart, Ruth Marie Kriner, of Greencastle.

Jack was also preceded in death by a brother, Robert L. Evans.

In addition to his wife, Jack is survived by a brother, Richard G. Evans and wife, Margaret, of Greencastle; three sons, John E. "Jack" Evans Jr. and wife, Sherry, of State College, Pa., James L. Evans and wife, Laura, of Sykesville, Md., and the Rev. Timothy C. Evans and wife, Nancy, of State College. He left a legacy of nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren who affectionately knew him as "PopPop."

His mechanical skills were always evident in Christmas train layouts and his love of automobiles â?? talents and interests that were passed on to his boys.

By faith, we believe Dad will be greeted by family and three of his best friends who also preceded in him in death, George Edwards, formerly of Greencastle; and Bob Rider and Bob Brumbaugh, both formerly of Hagerstown.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011, at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with the Rev. Michael Seger officiating. Family and friends will be received one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Jack will be laid to rest in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown, where military honors will be accorded by the U.S. Navy Funeral Honors Detachment.
