John R. Wagner

John R. â??Archieâ? Wagner, 73, of Hagerstown, passed away Saturday, March 12, 2011, peacefully at his home.

Born Jan. 2, 1938, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Kathryn L. Wagner and stepfather, Clyde R. Hose.

He served in the U.S. Navy onboard the USS Ticonderoga from 1955 to 1959, and he retired from Grand Union Supermarket and the Sheraton Four Points in Hagerstown.

Archie was a member of Boonsboro American Legion Post No. 10; Boonsboro Bass Masters Club; Williamsport Redmen; and the Retired Lappans Road AC&T Coffee and Fishing Buddies. Besides his love for fishing, he was an avid bowler and shuffleboard player for many years.

Archie is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Sherry A. Wagner; three daughters, Johnna R. Jackson and husband, Gary, of Virginia, Tammy S. Twigg and husband, Mark, of Williamsport, and Annissa J. Cline and husband, Jeff, of Greencastle, Pa.; two sons, Randy E. Wagner and wife, Teresa, of Hagerstown, and Chris D. Sasser and wife, Pam, of Clear Spring; three sisters, Linda â??Betsyâ? Huntzberry and husband, Bobby, of Fairplay, Nancy Sites and husband, Sam, of Mercersburg, Pa., and Donna Anderson and husband, Charlie, of Hagerstown; a brother, Robert â??Sonnyâ? Wagner and wife, Linda, of Millbrook, Ala.; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandsons; many nieces and nephews; and many beloved family members in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana, and the mother of his children, Susan Phillips. Also at home are his beloved pets, dog, Maddie and his two cats, Josie and Baby.

He was also preceded in death by one sister, Mary Mae Raines of Hagerstown.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 16, 2011, at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with the Rev. C. Michael Henning officiating. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
