John Sylvester Kennedy

John Sylvester Kennedy, 76, of Cumberland, passed away on Sunday, April 28, 2013 at Western Maryland Regional Hospital, in Cumberland.
Born February 23, 1937 in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late John F. and Catherine I. (Ricketts) Kennedy.
He was a 1956 graduate of Hagerstown High School.
John had worked for Dow Jones in Silver Spring and was a machinist at the Herald Mail for over 20 years. John retired in 2001 from Canteen where he repaired vending machines.
He was an avid fisherman. He enjoyed yard sales, feeding birds in his yard, and driving. He was a huge Baltimore Orioles fan!
He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Vera G. (Garton) Knight Kennedy; a daughter, Debra K. Norman of Cumberland; a sister, Lovalene Jones of Hagerstown; a brother, Vernon P. Kennedy of Tucson, AZ; a granddaughter, Michelle N. Evitts and husband Eric A. of Fairplay; a great-grandson, Ethan A. Evitts of Fairplay; a niece, Julie Chase of Hagerstown; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a step son, Wayne C. Knight and a sister, Monica Kennedy.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00pm on Friday, May 3, 2013 at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with Rev. Mark C. Mooney officiating. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery.
Friends will be received one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in John's name to Rest Haven Funeral Chapel or directly to the family.
