John William "Adam" Yeates, 88, of Hagerstown, died on Sunday, November 26, 2017 at Meritus Medical Center.
Born October 17, 1929, he was the son of the late Chester Lee and Margaret R. (Clapsaddle) Yeates. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his companion of many years, Jean Edith Hammond; a sister, Elizabeth "Liz" Cline and her husband Donald; an infant sister, Yvonne Maxine Yeates; a brother-in-law, Haven Keller; and his faithful dog, Bingo.
John was a graduate of Smithsburg High School.
He was a veteran of the United States Army.
He worked as a receiving clerk for Sears, McCroy's, and Hagerstown Noland.
He happily volunteered his time for many years at the Community Rescue Services in Hagerstown. John was a life member of the Washington County AmVets Post 10, Funkstown American Legion, and the VFW Post 1936, where he was also past post commander. He enjoyed bowling.
John is survived by three step children, Amanda Hammond, Chris Hammond and wife Angie, Dawn Smith and husband Pat; a brother, Henry Lee Yeates and wife Alice; two sisters, Evelyn Keller and Arlene Collitt; and a granddaughter, Charlie Smith. John also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00pm on Friday, December 1, 2017 at Rest Haven Funeral Home, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown. Burial will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery with military honors.
The family will receive friends from 6-8pm on Thursday at the funeral home.
