Joseph Alfred Rickard

Joseph Alfred Rickard, 84, of Hagerstown, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2012, at Meritus Medical Center.

Born May 9, 1928, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late William Maxwell and Helena (Walsh) Rickard.

Mr. Rickard retired from the Maryland Department of Corrections, where he was chief of security at MCTC, Hagerstown.

He was a U.S. Navy and U.S. Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He received the Combat Infantry Badge, Army Occupation Medal (Germany), Korean Service Medal with four Bronze Service Stars, United States Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.

He was a member of St. Maryâ??s Catholic Church, Hagerstown, and American Legion Dixon-Troxell Post 211, Funkstown.

He is survived by two sons, John W. Rickard of Dundalk, Md., and Jim Rickard and fiancee, Jessica Welch, of Hagerstown; two daughters, Susan R. Beyard and husband, Richard, of Boonsboro, Md., and Mary Ann Harne and husband, Dennis, of Hagerstown; one brother, Augustine Rickard and wife, Dottie, of Warrensburg, Mo.; six grandchildren, Megan Beyard Possert, Sean M. Beyard, Shannon Harne Mills, Craig A. Harne, Kristin Denee Harne and Alissa A. Rickard; and seven great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Donna Jean (Eichelberger) Rickard; three brothers, Richard, William and John Rickard; and two sisters, Helen Rickard Glass and Mary Rickard Brenner.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Sept. 6, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with the Rev. George A. Limmer officiating. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery.

Friends will be received at the funeral home one hour before services.
