Joseph Carl Llewellyn

Joseph Carl Llewellyn, 98, a 60 year resident of Hagerstown, MD and a 7 year resident of Williamsport, PA passed away March 23 at Williamsport Retirement Village.
Born June 11, 1915 in Belle Vernon PA he was the son of the late Thomas J Llewellyn and Nellie Belle Hauger Llewellyn and husband of the late Ruth Annette Llewellyn.
A veteran of the Army he served as a glider pilot in World War II.
Mr. Llewellyn retired from Fairchild Industries after a long career as a lofting engineer.
He was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Hagerstown and at one time served as a deacon.
He was enthusiastic about community service, volunteering at the Maryland Historical Societies, Maryland Food Banks, Hagerstown Girls Inc, and was a early supporter of recycling. He enjoyed teaching his children and other young adults about how things work.
Among his interests were flying, sports cars, and long distance running. He maintained his pilots license until he was 85 and flew often with friends. A celebrated elder athlete he still holds the record of the oldest male finisher of the JFK 50 Mile Ultra Marathon.
He is survived by his three children, Brenda Llewellyn Mayes of Onancock, VA, Beth Llewellyn of Avon Lake, OH, and Craig Llewellyn of Columbia, MD; one sister Barbara J Weyant of Somerset, PA; and six grandchildren, Dylan and Morgan Llewellyn Mayes, Scott and Sarah Llewellyn Chriss, and Katherine and Alex Llewellyn.
Burial will be private and a memorial service is planned for later in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to C & O Canal Trust, 1850 Dual Highway, Suite 100, Hagerstown, MD 21740.
