Joseph Travers Ruppert, 74, born Dec. 24, 1935, passed away Aug. 21, 2010, at Julia Manor Nursing home, where he resided since April 2009.

He was predeceased by his parents, Virginia Boyd Jones Ruppert and Joseph Alphonsus Ruppert of Ruxton, Md., and Sarasota, Fla., and an infant son, Todd Kendall Ruppert, in 1965.

He is survived by son, Travers Boyd Ruppert and his wife, Rita, of Hagerstown; grandchildren, Travers Michael Ruppert and wife, Liann, of Baltimore, Md., and Kelly Ann Ruppert Malekar and husband, David, of Hagerstown; a brother, Noel L. Ruppert and wife, Carey, of Savannah, Ga.; and nephew, Terry Ruppert, and niece, Noel Ruppert, both of California.

"Trav," as he was known to all, was a very popular local radio personality whose "Platter Party" entertained teens for many years beginning in the mid-1950s. He later hosted an afternoon radio talk show on WJEJ for many years, until he was taken ill in 2002.

He was a student at McDonough Military School in Baltimore and a graduate of Sarasota High School in 1955, where he had been ringmaster for the circus there. While in high school, Trav, who was a talented guitarist, as well as gifted vocalist, performed with his brother in talent shows.

He won a talent contest singing at the Hippodrome Theatre in Baltimore when he was a child. After that, Al Ross, then a well- known disc jockey for WBAL in Baltimore, took him under wing, picking him up at 5 a.m. and taking him to the radio station. Under his tutelage, Trav's interest blossomed and grew, leading him into the entertainment field.

Trav served in the military in 5th Special Forces Group/ABN from 1958-1962 in Germany as an announcer for Voice of America. Of all his accomplishments, he was most proud of this service to his country.

He was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Ruxton, where he served as an acolyte as a youngster.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2010, at 2 p.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with Pastor Bill McPherson officiating. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery.
