Lawrence Joseph Hartnett

June 12, 1919 — October 3, 2012

Lawrence Joseph Plumadore Hartnett of Maugansville, beloved husband, father, grandfather, father-in-law and great-grandfather, has entered into eternal life.

Born in Manhattan, N.Y., he was the son of Mary Ellen Hartnett and Jerome Plumadore.

He is preceded in death by his parents; twin infant daughters, Mary Frances and Catherine Ann; first wife, Elanor Angle Hartnett; grandson, Daniel Joseph Hartnett; four sisters, Carolyn Plumadore, Janice Richards, Helen Roach and Marion Downey; and son-in-law, Joseph Miley.

He is survived by loving wife, Rita Jane (Martin) Hartnett. They would have celebrated 62 years of matrimony on Oct. 28. He is also survived by six children, daughter Linda (Michael) Harsh of Williamsport, Md.; son Philip (Delsie) Hartnett of Clear Spring, Md.; daughter Mary Ann Miley of Denver, Colo., daughter Cynthia (Roland) Sorensen of Hagerstown, Md., daughter Margaret â??Pegâ? (Lewis) Payne of Remsen, N.Y. and daughter Carole Grenoble and fiancé, Richard Cummings, of Port Deposit, Md.; two sisters and their spouses, Patricia (Richard) Fassett of Ogdensburg, N.Y., and Barbara (Roger) Stone of Erie, Pa.; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandsons; and 32 nieces and nephews.

Raised in Staten Island, N.Y., he joined the U.S. Army I-Corps in 1941 and was stationed at Fort Ritchie, Md. He served in the 102nd Cavalry during WWII. His career started in sales at Potomac Edison and he retired from General Motors in Martinsburg, W.Va., in 1981. He was a devout member at St. Mary Catholic Church, including St. Vincent DePaul Society and Right to Life. He was a charter member of the Maugansville Ruritan Club, Knights of Columbus and American Legion Morris Frock Post 42, serving as chaplain and color guard. He volunteered at Western Maryland Hospital over a decade.

Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, Oct. 5, 2012, at 12:30 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Hagerstown, with the Rev. James Nirapple as celebrant.

A committal service will follow at Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary Catholic Church, 224 W. Washington St., Hagerstown, MD; St. Mary Chapter St. Vincent DePaul or Hospice of Washington County.
