Louis S. Parlato

Louis S. "Lou" Parlato, 94, of Hagerstown, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 2, 2013 at Meritus Medical Center. Born November 7, 1918 in Long Island City, NY, he was the son of the late Vito Louis and Esther (Englehardt) Parlato. Lou served 3 1/2 years in the U.S. Navy Seabees in Kodiak, Alaska and in the Pacific during WWII. He returned to active duty for one year during the Korean War where he was stationed on the Aleutian Islands. He was employed by the Long Island Lighting Company for 33 years and retired as district supervisor. He was umpire for the local youth baseball club and was a scoutmaster and advisor to an explorer troop. He, with the help of other dads, took the boys on several summer canoe trips down the Delaware River. Lou was also a youth advisor in the Massapequa Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Bridge of Life Church in Hagerstown and had volunteered at R.E.A.C.H. of Washington County. Lou loved his family and the Lord very much. During his retirement he could always be relied on to help where help was needed. He will be remembered for his loving nature and big heart. Lou is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Virginia (Zoller) Parlato; a daughter, Nancy LoPresto and husband Constantine; a son, Steven Parlato and wife Deborah all of Hagerstown; a grandson, David Parlato of Bellingham, WA; a granddaughter, Esther LoPresto of Hagerstown; a niece, Janice Soares and husband Tony of NY; three nephews, John Lanza of AZ, Eugene Lanza and wife Teresa of NY, and Douglas Ahlsen of NY. In addition to his parents, Lou was also preceded in death by two sisters, Evelyn Ahlsen, Mary Lanza; and a brother, William Parlato. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 7:00pm on Wednesday, March 6, 2013 at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with the Rev. Jim Davies officiating. Friends will be received one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at 1:00pm on Thursday, March 7, 2013 in Rest Haven Cemetery with military honors being accorded by the Navy and the Washington County Amvets Post No. 10. Friends will be received in the funeral home one hour prior to the burial.
