Madeline Jayne Shampo

February 16, 1925 — February 3, 2015

Madeline Jayne Shampo passed away on February 3, 2015, just 13 days prior to her 90th birthday, at her home in Salt Lake City.

Madeline was born in Rhode Island on February 16, 1925, and spent her childhood in Connecticut and Massachusetts.  She was a loving, happy, optimistic person who was loved by everyone and had so many friends.  Her love of adventure took her to Lincoln, Nebraska after she completed her Nursing degree in 1947 at Washington Adventist University, in Takoma Park, Maryland. There she met her first husband, Duane Higgins. They had two children, Sandra and Karen.  Tragically 6 years after their marriage Duane was killed in a car accident.  A couple of years later, Madeline fell in love with Harry Palmer, who had six children.  Shortly after they were married, they adopted a little girl, bringing the family total to 8 girls and 1 boy.  Madeline taught all of her children by example to be respectful, compassionate, hard-working, disciplined, honest, and to love God and family.  After 40 years of marriage Harry passed away.   A few years later, Madeline reconnected with Donald (Bud) Shampo, whom she had dated while in College 50 years before.  They soon realized they were in love, and were married.  They spent eight wonderful years together.  After Bud passed away, Madeline moved from Hagerstown, Maryland to Salt Lake City, Utah in 2010 to live near her youngest daughter, Karen. She made many new friends and maintained her life-long friendships as well.  Madeline was a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church.  Her love for God guided her life.

Madeline was preceded in death by her parents, Sadie and Frederick Kenerson; her two sisters Elizabeth Medell and Mildred Velho; her three husbands, Duane Higgins, Harry Palmer, and Donald Shampo; and adopted daughter Lisa Palmer.

She is survived by 2 children, Karen Higgins Henry (Bill), Sandra Higgins; 6 step-children, Maredith Palmer Torres, Patricia Palmer Poland (Gary), Donna Palmer Horton (Bruce), Joyce Palmer Lytton (John Schaefer), Debbe Palmer (Toland Sand), Harry Palmer, Jr. (Andreas); two nephews, Donald Kenerson (Marilyn) and David Velho (Kathy); 22 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm on March 28, 2015 at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery.
