Marguerite Eugenia Cyr

August 4, 1913 — December 15, 2014

Marguerite Eugenia Cyr, 101, of Hagerstown, passed away, Monday, December 15, 2014, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Born August 14, 1913 in Hollis Queens, Long Island, New York, she was the daughter of the late Stanislaus and Bronislawa (Bauer) Kawecki. In addition to her parents, she also was preceded in death by her husband, Roland Francios Cyr; six siblings, Henry Kawecki, Cashmire Cooey, Helen Kawecki, Laura Fitzgerald, Edwin Kawecki and Alvin Kawecki.

Mrs. Cyr was a 1937 graduate of Hunter College, New York City, where she received a BS degree in Art and Math.

She retired as a teacher of art and math at St. Maria Goretti High School, Hagerstown.

She was a member of St. Ann Roman Catholic Church, Hagerstown.

A lifetime member of the Girl Scouts where she served as troop leader and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Girl Scout Council of Hagerstown followed by her involvement in the creation of the Shawnee Girl Scout Council where she served as their first president and received the Woman of Distiction award in 2010; One of Marguerite's greatest passions in life was art. She was a member of the Spectrum Seven, The Mansion House at the City Park, the Valley Art Association and a docent at the Washington County Fine Art Museum. She also ran the Wednesday Morning Art Group at the YMCA for 17 years. Along with four other artists she helped create the mural that was installed on the Alexander House on the square in Hagerstown; Community service helped define her life. She worked to raise funds for the United Way and March of Dimes. Over the years she was named Volunteer of the year by Washington County, received the Book of Golden Deeds Award from the Hagerstown Exchange Club and the Zonata Woman of the Year Award. She manned the military hotline for the Red Cross eventually become a Board Member and then Chapter Chairwoman. She also was named a lifetime honorary Board Member several years ago.

Mrs. Cyr is survived by four children, Lawrence S. Cyr and wife Josephine, Virginia Cyr Sherr and husband, Howard, Laura Cyr and husband Jeff Varadi and Marguerite Helen Cyr; five grandchildren, Larry Cyr and wife Nell Paxton, Christopher Cyr, Michele Cyr Childress and husband Mitch, Andrew Sherr and wife Angela, Kenneth Sherr and wife Sarah; six great grandchildren, Shea Childress, Valeria, Samantha, Lola, Shelter and Georgia Sherr; one brother, Leo Kawecki and one sister, Lucy Hamilton.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, December 19, 2014 at 9:30 A.M. at St. Ann Roman Catholic Church, 1525 Oak Hill Ave., Hagerstown, with Monsignor J. Bruce Jarboe as Celebrant.

Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery.

Friends will be received on Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown.
