Mary Ethel (McArdle) Barber, 75, of Sharpsburg, died on Monday, Jan. 30, 2012, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Born Oct. 9, 1936, in Lowell, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Francis William and Christine Caroline (Bamford) McArdle.

Mary was a graduate of North Port High School on Long Island, N.Y.

She had worked as a homemaker and was the mother of four. Mary was a member of the Sharpsburg Historical Society. She loved to travel, listen to music, play Scrabble and spend time with her family and friends.

In addition to her parents, Mary also was preceded in death by her husband of 30 years, Albert William Barber Jr., who died on March 9, 1986.

Mary is survived by four daughters, Melissa Higdon of Sharpsburg, Laurie Reluzco of Frederick, Md., Annabel Hiltz and husband D.J. of St. Thomas, and Margaret â??Maggieâ? Surber and husband Edward of Hagerstown; a brother, Bernard McArdle of Mesa, Ariz.; seven grandchildren, Stephanie Anne Phares, Leah S. Higdon, John W. Higdon V, Jessica Surber, Emmett A. Lewis, William â??Billyâ? Surber, and Rhianon Higdon; three nephews, David McArdle of Los Angeles, Tommy McArdle of Mesa, and Brian McArdle of Seattle; a niece, Carol; and several other close friends and relatives, Dan Weaver of North Potomac, Judith Block of Washington, D.C., Daryl Davis of Wheaton, Md., Janet Fisher of Silver Spring, and Ed Weston of Orange, Va.

A celebration of Maryâ??s life will be conducted at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012, at her home, 135 W. Main St., Sharpsburg. Inurnment will be private and held at the convenience of the family.
