M. Irene Nelson, 91, of Hagerstown, passed away Thursday, November 28, 2019 at Somerford Assisted Living.

Born October 25, 1928, in Hyattsville, MD, she was the daughter of the late Jay Howard and Nora Ellen (Bradecamp) Johnson. Mrs. Nelson was also formerly of Lusby, MD, and Riverdale Park, MD.

She retired as a bank teller and rental property manager.

Irene enjoyed playing cards and Scrabble, spoiling her dog, going to the hair salon, and shopping.

She is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Donald Lawrence Nelson; four grandchildren, Christina A. Davis and husband Edward Joynes of Hagerstown, Deborah L. Murphy and husband Jim of Highland, MD, James C. Davis, Jr., and wife Lori of Germantown, MD, and John E. Davis and wife Tina of Riverdale Park, MD; a nephew, John R. Waddle, Jr., of Hyattsville; several nieces, including Linda J. Johnson of Brentwood, MD; six great-grandchildren; and her faithful shelter dog, Lando.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters and two dogs.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 4, 2019, at Rest Haven Funeral Home, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown. Burial will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service and again following the burial for fellowship and refreshments.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742 or to Somerford Assisted Living, 10116 Sharpsburg Pike, Hagerstown, MD 21740.
