Merle Luther Houpt

Merle Luther Houpt, 84, of Hagerstown, died Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Born Dec. 27, 1926, in Boonsboro, he was the son of the late Harvey Edgar and Esta May (McCauley) Houpt.

He was a graduate of Boonsboro High School. Merle was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of Beaver Creek Christian Church and also attended Hancock United Methodist Church. Merle loved flying airplanes, music, traveling in a motor home with his family, as well as fishing and hunting. He retired from Potomac Edison as a line supervisor.

Surviving Merle is his loving wife of 61 years, Genevieve Carolyn (Hofe) Houpt; two daughters, Carolyn Line and husband, Martin, of Hagerstown, and Donna Miller and husband, Russ, of Hancock; three sisters, Dorothy G. Stouffer of Hagerstown, and Freda E. Tucker and Louise E. Hoffman, both of Boonsboro; a brother, Harold E. Houpt of Olympia, Wash.; and five grandchildren, Alan Line and wife, Ren, Kristi Line, Jenna Line, Pastor Jennifer Webber and husband, Robert, and Bryce Miller.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Roger E. Houpt.

A funeral service will be Monday, Dec. 5, 2011, at 10 a.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with the Rev. Duane Jensen officiating. Interment will follow with military honors being accorded by the AMVETS and the Marine Corps League.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
