Mildred Mae Dieterich

Mildred Mae Dieterich, 93, of Hagerstown, passed away peacefully and went to be with her heavenly Father on Thursday, April 29, 2010, at Ravenwood Nursing Home of Hagerstown.

Born Feb. 9, 1917, in Funkstown, she was the daughter of the late William Statton and Daisy Elizabeth (Schildneck) Bowman.

For most of her life, she resided with her husband, Fred, at 512 S. Cannon Ave., in Hagerstown, where they enjoyed 65 happy years of marriage. The couple then moved to Hilltop Assisted Living at Homewood Retirement Center in Williamsport, where they resided for the rest of their lives.

Mildred was a 1935 graduate of Hagerstown High School, where she was a member of the Glee and Double Circle clubs.

After graduating, she was employed in the accounting and purchasing departments of Fairchild Aircraft. She later was employed in the cafeteria at Bester Elementary School.

She was a longtime member of Christ's Reformed Church in Hagerstown. For many years, Mildred enjoyed being a children's Sunday school teacher and a member of the ladies Rebekah Sunday School class. She enjoyed serving the church by washing communion cups, visiting sick and shut-in members, and delivering altar flowers.

At home, Mildred enjoyed sewing for friends and family, and working in the vegetable and flower gardens. She loved reading and having people stop in to visit.

Her loving husband, George Fred Dieterich Jr., passed away in 2006. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Ronald L. Dieterich; a grandson, Matthew F. Cool; a sister, M. Pauline Fields; and a half brother, Ernest R. Bowman.

She is survived by her daughter, Lois D. and son-in-law, Brian H. Herchenrother of Hagerstown; daughter-in-law, Nancy K. Dieterich of Powder Springs, Ga.; four grandchildren, Melissa C. and husband, Joseph Reed of Greencastle, Pa., Terry F. Cool Jr. of State Line, Pa., Lauren K. Dieterich of Stone Mountain, Ga., and Paul M. Dieterich of San Jose, Calif.; and two great-grandchildren, Gavin C. and Aiden M. Reed of Greencastle, Pa.; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 11, 2010, at Christ's Reformed Church, 130 W. Franklin St., Hagerstown, with the Rev. Gregg R. Meserole and the Rev. Don R. Stevenson officiating. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery.

Friends will be received Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown.
