Nancy Alice Spessard Phelan

Nancy Alice Spessard Phelan, 79, of Greencastle, and formerly of Hagerstown, lost her long battle with Parkinsonâ??s disease and passed away peacefully on Sunday, Jan. 16, 2011, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Jolinda and Rob Beers, in Keymar, Md.

Born Sept. 29, 1931, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Grace and Gerald Barnhart.

Nancy was preceded in death by her first husband, Russell â??Junieâ? Spessard.

She graduated from Hagerstown High School, class of 1949.

She was employed by Fairchild Aircraft and Angstrom Precision.

She was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church in Hagerstown, American Legion Post 42 Auxiliary, Hagerstown, Greencastle Lioness Club and the Greencastle VFW Post 6319 Auxiliary.

She loved sewing, puzzles, playing dominoes and traveling.

Nancy is survived by her caring husband of 20 years, Vincent Phelan; a son, Jerry Spessard and wife, Debbie, of Mercersburg, Pa.; two daughters, Darla Springer and husband, Pete, of Hedgesville, W.Va., and Jolinda Beers and husband, Rob, of Keymar; two brothers, Donald Barnhart of Glenelg, Md., and Gerald Barnhart of Williamsport, Md.; two sisters, Barbara Jean Wagner of Boonsboro and Judy Johnson of San Antonio, Texas; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

In addition to her parents and first husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul Harp and Maurice Barnhart; and two sisters, Delores Shipley and Kate Baker.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011, at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with Stephen Robison of Otterbein United Methodist Church in Hagerstown and James Benedict, Union Bridge Church of the Brethren, Union Bridge, Md., officiating. Burial will follow at Rest Haven Cemetery.

Family and friends will be received from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
