Nicholas John Scallion

February 7, 1929 — October 19, 2010

Nicholas John Scallion, husband of 58 years, father, grandfather, U.S. Marine, coach, friend and lifelong Yankee fan, passed away Tuesday evening, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Chicago, Ill., Nick was the son of Leonard and Mary Walko Scallion of Hazleton, Pa.

Nick graduated from Hazleton High School in 1947, Washington College of Chestertown, Md., with a BA in education in 1952, and William and Mary College with a master's degree in education administration in 1967.

Nick's skill and love of sports led him to a basketball scholarship at Washington College, where he met Mary Ellen Ivory. They married in 1952.

Nick served as a first lieutenant in the 3rd Marine Division while serving in Korea and Japan from 1952 to 1954.

Upon his return from Korea, Nick began his first teaching job at Crisfield High School, where he also began his basketball coaching career. Nick led the Crisfield Crabbers to two state finals and the 1957 championship. Nick moved to Hagerstown and South Hagerstown High School in 1957, where he taught history, psychology and drivers' education until his retirement in 1991. Nick coached the South High Rebels for many years, leading the Rebels to an undefeated state title in 1974.

Nick's love of sports extended to an active refereeing career, where he continued to enjoy participation in the team sports of basketball and volleyball. Nick has enjoyed playing tennis for over 40 years, participating in an active tennis group, and attending the U.S. Open annually.

Nick's other passions included jazz, and spending time enjoying family and friends. Nick has been an active member of the Knights of Columbus, Elks and American Legion.

Nick is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen; his children, Gerald, Anne, Mark, Matt and Nancy; and his grandchildren, Kyle, Nicholas, Sarah, Maddie, Paige, Caroline, Natalie, Keri, Jake, Henry and Meghan.

Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday, Oct. 22, 2010, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Ann's Catholic Church, 1525 Oak Hill Ave., Hagerstown, Md., with the Rev. Martin Nocchi as celebrant. Interment will follow at Rest Haven Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by the U.S. Marine Corps Honor Guard.

Friends will be received today from 6 to 9 p.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown.
