Paul E. Wigfield

Paul E. Wigfield, 88, of Hagerstown, passed away on Thursday, April 14, 2011, surrounded by his family at Meritus Medical Center near Hagerstown.
Born Sept. 22, 1922, in Buck Valley, Pa., he was the son of the late Clem Austin and Edith (Sigel) Wigfield.
He was a 1940 graduate of Flintstone High School in Flintstone, Md.
Paul was a proud veteran, having served 3 1/2 years in the U.S. Air Force during World War II in the North African and Middle Eastern theater of operation.
He retired in 1986 from the General Motors Parts Division in Martinsburg, W.Va., after 18 years of service. Paul had previously retired as a sergeant of the Hagerstown Police Department after 20 years, where he last served as a training officer. While employed there, he graduated from the FBI police academy. Paul had also worked as a city bus driver for the Blue Ridge Bus Lines in the 1940s.
Paul was a member of Morris Frock American Legion Post 42 in Hagerstown; Eagles Club Inc. of Waynesboro, Pa.; UAW Local 1590 of Martinsburg.; and a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association.
He was an avid ten-pin bowler and pistol shooter. Paul was the captain of the Hagerstown police pistol team for several years, as well as a member of the Chambersburg Rod and Gun Club pistol team.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Helen Wigfield; a son, Paul Douglas Wigfield and wife, Alice, of Mardela Springs, Md.; a daughter, Geri Lynn Wood and husband, John, of Hedgesville, W.Va.; four granddaughters, Dana and Erin Kline, Kelly McKelvey and husband, Dr. Kevin McKelvey, and Courtney Slutzky and husband, Todd; three great-grandsons; and two great-granddaughters.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, April 19, 2011, at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with the Chaplain Richard Hembrock officiating. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by Morris Frock American Legion Post 42.
Friends will be received on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.
