Paul Milford Smallwood

Paul Milford Smallwood, beloved husband, father and grandfather, 90, of Hagerstown, passed away Friday, July 9, 2010, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Feb. 12, 1920, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Howard Milford and Ada Margaret (French) Smallwood.

Mr. Smallwood retired in 1982 with 26 1/2 years of service as a correctional officer with MCI.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 100th Infantry Division in Europe as a demolition specialist.

He attended Howard Street School and South Potomac Junior High School through the ninth grade.

He was a member of Bridge of Life Church (formerly Faith Chapel), Morris Frock American Legion Post 42, 100th Infantry Association and Duck Pin Bowling League at Longmeadow. He was a boy scout and participated in the local Hagerstown baseball league in his younger years. He also was an avid fisherman and reader.

He is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy Elaine (Wolf) Smallwood; one daughter, Carol J. Baker of Hagerstown; one granddaughter, Michelle E. Short and husband, Jeff, of Hagerstown; two grandsons, Senior Airman Jeffrey L. Short Jr. and Jordyn Short; and many loving nieces, nephews and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Janet MacMichaels; and one brother, Glen Smallwood.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, July 13, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with Pastor Jim Davies officiating. Interment will follow in Smithsburg Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by Morris Frock American Legion Post 42 Honor Guard.

Friends will be received Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday one hour before services at the funeral home.
