July 4, 1910 — March 21, 2013

Pauline Loretta Schlotterbeck, 102, passed away peacefully on Thursday March 21, 2013 at her home while surrounded by family. Born in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Ritchie Walter and Elta Julia (Schamel) Connor. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 54 years, Earl (Nico) Preston Schlotterbeck, Sr. in 1991.

Mrs. Schlotterbeck is survived by three sons whom she loved dearly, Earl Preston Schlotterbeck, Jr. and his wife, Jessica, of Williamsport, Karl Ritchie Schlotterbeck and his wife Carol of Ham Lake, Mn. and Kirk Winston Schlotterbeck and his wife Joanne of Berlin, Md; grandchildren including Bradley Schlotterbeck, Eric Snyder, Erin Kasper-Frett, Mark Schlotterbeck, Anneliese Lucier, Nichol Schlotterbeck, Earl Schlotterbeck III, Chad Miller, Seth Kniskern and Timothy Rohrer; 16 great children and many Schlotterbeck descendants and close friends.

Pauline Loretta was born on July Fourth 1910 and was graduated from Hagerstown High School, Towson Normal School (for teaching) and at the age of 65 graduated from Glenville State College. Pauline fondly remembered the antics of her mischievous mother, Elta. Other fond memories included a cross country trip from Hagerstown to Los Angeles Ca. to attend Southern California University. She traveled in an open Model "A" Ford with her best friend Charlotte Minnick and three other friends. While in Los Angeles she attended the 1932 Summer Olympic games. Pauline lived through the Depression and remembered that she made $18 a week teaching at Broadway Elementary. Pauline Loretta and Nico married in 1937. In the 1930s married female teachers were not allowed, so she had to keep her marriage a secret to follow her dream.

Following the beginning of World War II, Pauline stayed home to raise Earl Jr, while Nico served in the Pacific. When he returned from the war, they raised their three sons in Halfway Md. Pauline and Nico taught their sons to be independent, and encouraged them to pursue their interests. Nico and Pauline were always there for them along life's journey. Later, she returned to teaching at Pangborn Elementary School until she retired when she moved to Glenville, W.Va. to support Nico in opening a new shoe manufacturing plant. After Nico retired, they moved back to the Halfway, Md area.

Pauline faithfully attended Trinity Lutheran Church in Hagerstown and taught Sunday School until she physically could not attend. Pauline supported orphans through the ChildFund charity and enjoyed the thank you letters from the children she helped. She enjoyed painting, exercising, swimming, gardening, playing her organ, and she took lessons in calligraphy. She also enjoyed driving her Studebaker convertible. She took trips to Hawaii, Mexico, and Egypt. She and Nico traveled across the United States in their recreational vehicle visiting friends and relatives while enjoying the beauty of our great nation.

For years family and friends celebrated Pauline's birthday along with our nation's birth with the traditional Fourth of July picnic. Dressed in red, white and blue, Pauline was proud to be born on Independence Day. When she reached 100 she was featured on ABC7 TV and in the Herald-Mail. In her later years she was lovingly cared for at her home by Earl and Jessica Schlotterbeck and enjoyed visits with family and friends, eating out, and movies.

The funeral will be held at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Avenue, Hagerstown, with Rev. Sue Cushen Snyder, Ph.D. officiating. Burial will follow at the Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown. The family will receive friends on Monday 7-9 PM at the funeral home and 1 hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Washington County 747 Northern Ave Hagerstown, MD 21742 or Trinity Lutheran Church 15 Randolph Avenue Hagerstown, MD 21742.
