Phyllis Marie (Groh) Pitzer, 87, of Hagerstown, died Friday, Feb. 17, 2012, at Ravenwood Lutheran Village.
Born May 16, 1924, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Edison Young and Edna (Doub) Groh.
She was a 1942 graduate of Hagerstown High School, and went on to graduate in 1946 from Duke University with a bachelor of arts degree in economics.
Phyllis was a lifetime member of the Washington County Historical Society; an honorary life member of the Hagerstown Branch AAUW; an honorary member of the Maryland Symphony Orchestra Guild; a charter member of the Woodland Garden Club; a member of St. Johnâ??s Lutheran Church, the Womenâ??s Club, Conococheague Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution, Fountain Head Country Club, Alpha Chi Omega Fraternity, Zonta Club of Hagerstown and the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts.
She was a supporter of the Maryland Symphony Orchestra; the Maryland Symphony Orchestra Guild; Washington County Museum of Fine Arts; The Maryland Theatre; and Childrenâ??s Village.
Phyllis was active in real estate management all her life.
In addition to her parents, Phyllis was preceded in death by her loving husband, Charles Lupton Pitzer, who died April 2, 2009.
She is survived by a son, William G. Pitzer of Hagerstown; a sister, Lois G. Unger and husband, John Jr., of Hagerstown; a niece, Margery of Midlothian, Va.; and three nephews, Henry of Virginia Beach, Va., David of Windham, N.H., and Donald of Wilmington, Del.
A funeral service will be conducted at noon Friday, Feb. 24, 2012, at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with the Rev. Edward Heim officiating. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery.
Friends will be received one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
