Ralph B. Martin, Sr.

September 6, 1926 — July 19, 2021

Ralph B. Martin an avid golfer, fisherman and hunter passed away peacefully on July 19th to be with his loving wife and navigator of 73 years, Yvonne who predeceased him on November 20,2020.

He was born on September 6th, 1926, the son of Harry and Ruth Martin of Hagerstown. He was predeceased by his parents, his 2 brothers, Marvin, and Buck and 4 sisters Pat Statler, Virginia Schnurr, Jean Weaver, and Helen Mellott. He is survived by 2 sisters M. Georganna Grossnickel, Dorothy Lorraine Troxell, his children Ralph B. Martin Jr. of Hanover Pa.; Travis Martin Tallman and son in law Michael of Whitehouse Station, NJ and grandson Matthew M. Tallman and his wife Olga of Peapack, New Jersey and numerous nieces and nephews.

He started his career at the age of 17 as an electrician for the Western Maryland Railroad and then served in the U.S. Navy as an electrician’s mate on the USS Foss from 1944-45. He met his wife Yvonne Viola Scott at a dance in Hagerstown at the end of his Navy service and they were married shortly thereafter. He returned to the railroad and went up through management positions in Cumberland Maryland, Elkins W.Va., Ridgeley W.Va. and then back to Hagerstown where he resided for the last 57 years. He was a hands-on manager working all night to up right many derailed trains in the cold winter mountains of W.Va. He ended his career in 1992 as Master Mechanic of the System for the Western Maryland and Chessie systems operations in Maryland, W.Va. and Pennsylvania.

He was a lifelong fisherman and hunter taking several fishing trips to Canada with his son and brother. He loved fishing in the Potomac River from Paw Paw W.Va. to Dam #4. He didn’t start playing golf until after his retirement but then never stopped until the age of 92 years. He won a number of Senior trophies and was a member of the Beaver Creek Country Club. He was a Lifetime Member of the Elks of Hagerstown, Western Maryland Sportsman’s Club, Funkstown Legion, South Mountain Rod and Gun Club and several other social clubs.

He enjoyed traveling within the eastern U.S. with his wife, friends, and golfing buddies. He also traveled to follow his son’s Industrial softball tournaments and his grandson Matthew’s USTA and college tennis tournaments.

A Graveside memorial service will be held Friday August 27th at 1:00 P.M. at Rest Haven Cemetery for family and friends.
